Beethoven / Shostakovich

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony provided a template for many symphonic works by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and many other composers, in which tragedy depicted in the early movements is ultimately overcome by triumph in the final movement. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony turns this premise upside down with its smuggled-in message of subversion against the Soviet state — the very opposite of the work’s outwardly optimistic stance!  Enjoy a rare opportunity to hear this shatteringly emotional work along with the “original” Fifth.

As an added bonus, we’re performing the West Coast premiere of Gustav Mahler’s “retouched” version, in which some of Beethoven’s orchestrations are clarified and made more effective.
