Pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m.

  • Elfman: Ice Dance from Edward Scissorhands
  • Higdon: Concerto for Orchestra
  • Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2
    with Tamami Honma, piano

Our June 3 concert features two major blockbusters, but first we'll open with Danny Elfman's haunting Ice Dance from the film, Edward Scissorhands. Next, we'll perform Jennifer Higdon's kaleidoscopic virtuoso showpiece, the Concerto for Orchestra (2002). Movements one, three, and five give every section and instrument an intense workout, and are the piece's frame. The strings and percussion sections are given movements two and four, respectively. Finally, we welcome pianist Tamami Honma to our stage for the first time to perform one of the greatest and most beloved works in the classical canon, Brahms' second piano concerto.
