Message from the Maestro

Dear Valued Patrons,

I’m very excited about our upcoming 38th season! We’re counting on a return to “business as usual” for our concerts for 2022–2023!

Our soloists include Jonah Kim in the Bay Area premiere of Mason Bates’ virtuoso showcase, Cello Concerto, and Miranda Liu in Shostakovich’s powerful Violin Concerto No. 1. Louise Costigan-Kerns will be featured in one of Mozart’s most magical works, Piano Concerto No. 17 in G.

We’re planning a Sondheim show for next season, too, and it will be our biggest event in many years. Details coming in September!

Other highlights:

  • The orchestra continues to explore composers who are from underrepresented groups with music by Florence Price, Rain Worthington and William Grant Still.
  • In addition to Bates and Worthing- ton, another contemporary work to be performed is the local premiere of the great Steven Reich’s latest orchestral piece, Music for Ensemble and Orchestra.
  • Our third complete Mahler cycle returns with the Fourth Symphony, with the moving soprano solo describing Heaven as a food paradise.
  • Redwood Symphony’s signature Halloween Concert returns, including our famous Tour of the Orchestra, a one-hour concert with a group conducting lesson and a few lucky kids on my podium conducting the orchestra. Everyone will be in costume!

Please consider supporting the orchestra — and save money on your season tickets — by subscribing to our five-concert season. We’re very grateful to our friends for their generous and loyal support for the region’s most adventurous and innovative community orchestra!

Best wishes and hope to see you soon,
~Maestro Eric K
