  • Eric K, conductor
  • Florence Beatrice Price Ethiopia’s Shadow in America
  • Steve Reich Music for Ensemble and Orchestra
  • Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 3

We begin our 38th season with a diverse collection of rarely-heard masterpieces. Florence Price (1887-1953) was a prominent black musician in Chicago who had her First Symphony premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but most of her works were not premiered until after her death; Ethiopia’s Shadow in America did not receive its premiere until 2015!

Written at age 84 by one of America’s greatest living composers, Steve Reich’s Music for Ensemble and Orchestra (2018) is one of only a tiny handful of his works scored for full orchestra, and a major achievement in a long and continuing career.

Finally, in his Third Symphony, Sibelius took his single biggest leap into his mature style, which prioritized a rigorous and all-encompassing unity of form and thematic development over his previous romantic nationalism.
