- Eric Kujawsky, conductor
- Ariel Estebez, soprano
- Claude Debussy Nocturnes
- Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4
This program will leave you in heavenly bliss!
We open with a Debussy Impressionist triptych that vividly encompasses the movements “Clouds,” “Festivals” and “Sirens” (with wordless chorus).
Of all Mahler’s symphonies, the amiable Fourth is the most atypical: a transparently scored,
exquisitely nuanced parody of an 18th century classical symphony that includes a macabre dance with
Death, a theme and variations, and a final movement that is just a song with soprano—about a
child’s view of Heaven (all culinary)!
By the way, this concert vividly illustrates the wide range of musical styles extant in 1901, the year
both pieces were premiered!
