Stravinsky Chamber and Choral Music: The Soldier’s Tale and A Wedding
Musical Discovery
Few composers shaped the 20th century more profoundly than Igor Stravinsky. This two-concert festival – with micro lectures – will reveal a chameleonic composer continually reinventing his musical language. We are delighted to be joined by many noted musical guests, ensembles and conductors for this very special two-part event!
What makes this concert special?
Eric Kujawsky: “The music of Igor Stravinsky was truly the catalyst for my life’s direction, and there are so many favorites of mine, all on one day! But the real delight of this Festival is what I, and many others, believe to be Stravinsky’s greatest, most personal, and unfortunately rarely-performed piece, Les Noces.

The story is about a Russian village wedding and the preparations leading up to it – but there’s so much more! The 30-minute work plays out like a joyous, slightly scary, and very irresistible rhythmic rollercoaster, with rapid-fire, overlapping perspectives and stream-of-conscious dialogue; yet there are also many moving and joyous moments that culminate with an overwhelming emotional impact (check out the ballet on YouTube!).
Although Stravinsky finished Les Noces in sketch form fairly quickly (with a chorus and four vocal soloists) it took another decade and many different experimental orchestrations to complete (longer by far than any other work of his), with perhaps the most extraordinary-yet-appropriate instrumental ensemble in classical music: four pianists and six percussionists! The rhythmic virtuosity and rapidity of the Russian text (in English for this performance) are additional factors that have made this unique and dazzling work a very rare find in the concert hall, and consequently an event not to be missed!
