Redwood Symphony is delighted to begin its fifth decade by celebrating the 100th birthday of — and with — our friend, Kirke Mechem, featuring his “The Jayhawk, Magic Bird Overture!” The orchestra is also celebrating the power of virtuosity and showmanship with two superstar vehicles: Prokofiev’s powerful Second Piano Concerto with Daniel Glover and Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra.
Music Director Eric Kujawsky says, “If Stravinsky’s Firebird and Woody Woodpecker had a son, it would be the Jayhawk. This is one wacky piece of music!”
Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is renowned for requiring the highest level of superstar soloists, and we have one! Come see Daniel Glover take on the ultra-demanding and entertaining Prokofiev work.
Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra concludes the concert.
