3 B's: Bates, Britten and Brahms!
Concert at: 8 p.m.
Pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m.
- Mason Bates: Rusty Air in Carolina
- Benjamin Britten: Piano Concerto, Op. 13
Tamami Honma, piano - Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F, Op. 90
Kristin Link conducting - Bates: Mothership
Our season opener features two works of Mason Bates, hailed as the most-performed classical composer of his generation. A Bay Area resident originally from Virginia, Bates uses electronica to evoke the American South with Rusty Air in Carolina. This jazzy score incorporates cicadas, crickets and birds into a riveting soundscape.
In Bates' Mothership, four individual players from the orchestra are showcased in improvisational “dockings” with an orchestral spacecraft, also using electronica “beamed” at the audience from multiple points of the concert hall.
Pianist Tamami Honma makes a return appearance with Redwood Symphony performing Benjamin Britten's sole piano concerto, a youthful work in four very bravura movements.
Finally, Redwood Symphony's Assistant Conductor Kristin Turner Link takes a turn at the podium leading Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3, proclaimed by one of Brahms' contemporaries as his “most perfect” symphony.
